Benign conditions and radiation therapy
Established treatments (anti-inflammatories, steroid injections, physiotherapy) are shown to have variable effectiveness and, in some cases, randomized trials have shown superior outcomes. 1, 2, 3, 4
For example, a recent randomized trial comparing radio- therapy to steroid injections for Plantar fasciitis/heel spurs showed improved response and duration of pain control in favour of the radiotherapy group.5
Non-oncological radiation therapy is a safe treatment with virtually no toxicity. Normally, it is done in three weekly sessions of less than 15 minutes each. It is a painless, non-invasive treatment, does not interfere with the daily activity of the patient and it does not require sedation, fasting or observation after each session.
Common benign conditions
This condition affects the tissue that connects the palm of the hand and fingers. This tissue contracts and over time, the affected person cannot open his hand. Radiation can inhibit the development of contracture. And swelling reduction increases the patient´s quality of life. Read More
Hip arthrosis (Coxarthrosis)
It is caused by the deterioration of the cartilage covering the surfaces of the bones that form the hip joint. Over time, it limits the ability to move and makes walking difficult. Treatment with radiotherapy reduces the inflammation produced by bone degeneration and mitigates pain, facilitating mobility.
Keloids are the excess growth of scar tissue. They can appear after repeated surgeries in the same location, burns, etc. Recurrence rates of the condition in Keloids surgery are higher than 80%. Radiation therapy is the only treatment that has proven the reduction of recurrence after surgery.
Knee osteoarthritis (Gonarthrosis)
Osteoarthritis of the knee (Gonarthrosis) frequently causes both pain and functional limitation.
Due to different causes, the tendons and ligaments of the sole of the foot can be overloaded and inflamed chronically, and this is known as plantar fasciitis. Most medications provide short term pain relief, but radiotherapy reduces the inflammation that occurs with plantar fasciitis, and therefore improves quality of life.
Thumb osteoarthritis (Rizarthrosis)
Osteoarthritis of the thumb is the wear on the joint that joins the thumb to the wrist.
Who can benefit from these treatment?
People with a condition that cannot be controlled with conventional treatments such as rehabilitation or infiltrations.
People with a condition that involves high-risk interventions (drug toxicity, surgery).
People over 60 years old. Age, comorbidity or the confluence of several conditions are not limiting factors for the treatment.
