Private mpMRI prostate scan
An MRI scan that creates more detailed images of the prostate can help accurately diagnose prostate cancer and plan treatment. It can also be used as part of prostate cancer screening.
About MRI scans for prostate cancer
At GenesisCare we use an advanced type of MRI scan called a multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) scan. It’s similar to an MRI scan but creates more detailed pictures which helps us accurately detect, diagnose, and plan treatment for prostate cancer.
For most men, the results will be normal. If the results show any areas of concern, further investigative testing will be required. One of our expert urologists will give you advice and discuss your options with you.
If you’re concerned about prostate cancer, you can self-refer for a private mpMRI prostate scan at GenesisCare without the need for a referral from your GP.

How accurate is an mpMRI for prostate cancer?
An mpMRI prostate scan is a screening test. On its own it won’t show if you have prostate cancer. However, doctors use the results to assess your risk of cancer being present and if more tests, such as a biopsy are required.
Recent research has found mpMRI scans combined with a PSA test, improve the diagnosis of prostate cancer. This is done by taking the volume of the prostate gland reported from an mpMRI scan, combined with the results of a PSA blood test to give a PSA density score. This enables doctors to assess your risk of developing prostate cancer. It is also more reliable than a PSA test at showing if your risk of prostate cancer is low. If this is the case, you may be able to avoid further unnecessary tests and treatment.
Am I eligible for an mpMRI scan to detect prostate cancer?
You are eligible for an mpMRI prostate scan if you’re:
- Aged 40 and over with any of the following risk factors:
- A family history of prostate cancer
- Are of black ethnicity
- Have a high PSA level
- Aged 50 and over and not had an mpMRI prostate scan in the last 12 months
What if I have a normal PSA level?
If you're concerned about prostate cancer, particularly if you're recognised as at higher risk and fit the criteria above, you can have an mpMRI prostate scan even if your PSA level is considered normal.
I have a raised PSA level but I'm not eligible for further testing through the NHS
For further investigation or peace of mind, if you meet the criteria above, you can book a private prostate mpMRI scan at GenesisCare.
How much does a private mpMRI scan cost?
mpMRI prostate cancer scans are available at the following GenesisCare centres with both private medical insurance and self-pay options available.
- mpMRI scan (including a report produced by a radiologist) from £900
- PSA blood test (if required) from £70
- Follow up consultation with an expert Urologist from £250*
*For symptomatic patients wishing to self pay, additional consultation fees may apply. Please confirm these with your consultant.

What happens on the day of a prostate mpMRI scan?
You’ll be able to have your PSA blood test (if required) and your mpMRI scan on the same day.
If you’ve had a PSA blood test in the past 3 months, you’ll need to provide the results before your appointment.
Before your scan, we’ll ask you to complete an MRI safety questionnaire, and you should let us know if you have any metal implants, body piercings or electrical devices such as a pacemaker.
You will need to have an injection of a special dye (contrast media) that will help highlight specific areas of your pelvis on this scan. This will be administered by injecting the dye into a vein in your arm or hand using a cannula (a small plastic tube).
The scan itself takes around 40 minutes, and you’ll need to lie still. Our friendly and welcoming team will be on hand to make sure you’re comfortable throughout. When your scan has been completed, you'll be able to leave the centre.
Results and follow-up
The results of your scan will take a few days to prepare. If you have self-referred, you will be offered a virtual or in person consultation with one of our expert urologists who will discuss your results with you. If you were referred by your consultant, the result will go back to them and they will contact you to organise a follow-up consultation.
The results will show if further testing, such as a biopsy is needed. Your Urologist will give you advice and discuss your options with you.
If you need to have further tests, you can choose to have these at GenesisCare, through self-pay or your private medical insurance. You can also choose to be referred to the NHS for further tests through your GP.
If no further tests are needed, we’ll write to your GP explaining the results.
It’s important to be aware that even if the results of a prostate MRI/mpMRI scan are negative, prostate cancer can still develop in the future.
FAQs
A PSA test is a blood test. You can have this through your GP or at GenesisCare. The test is quick and simple and shows the level of PSA (prostate specific antigen) in your blood.
A PSA test doesn’t show if you have cancer, but it can help your doctor advise next steps. Although a high PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer, it may be caused by something else such as an enlarged prostate also referred to as BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis). In addition, some men with prostate cancer may have a normal PSA result.
A prostate mpMRI scan does not diagnose prostate cancer on its own, but it can help doctors decide if further tests are needed.
An mpMRI scan shows if there are areas of concern in the prostate, known as lesions. If none are found, prostate cancer is unlikely and usually no further tests will be required.
If lesions are detected, a further test called a biopsy is usually recommended. During a biopsy, a small sample is taken from the prostate and checked to see if it is cancerous.
An mpMRI scan can also help assess if prostate cancer has spread.
If you’re aged over 50, you can request a PSA test from your GP. You can also arrange to have a PSA test at GenesisCare.
