Dr Liebenberg was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1966 and grew up in Northern Namibia. He studied medicine at the University of Stellenbosch, in a little university town close to Cape Town and qualified as a Chest Physician in 1997. Dr Liebenberg spent a few years in a tertiary ICU, before entering private practice in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town (Durbanville) as a Chest and HIV physician.

Together with his family he relocated to Bundaberg in 2007, where he initially worked at the Bundaberg Specialist Centre, Bundaberg Base Hospital and the Friendly Society Private Hospitals as a General and Chest Physician. Since November 2010 he has also run a solo practice at the Bundaberg Mater Hospital as a Chest and Sleep Physician. In February 2013 he commenced Sleep Services from his rooms at the Mater Hospital following the completion of a Fellowship in Sleep Medicine.
