Importance of early detection

Early detection is key for breast cancer survival and an annual mammogram is essential in protecting yourself. The aim of breast screening is to pick up early cancers in healthy individuals, who do not have symptoms.

Breast Screen Australia recommends

  1. Women ages 40-49

You can speak to your GP about whether breast screening is right for you, breast screening is less effective for women in your age group.

  2. Women between 50-74

a mammogram once every two years.

  3.  Women 75+

Screening should continue every other year as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.
