London Cromwell Stereotactic Radiotherapy

London Cromwell Stereotactic Radiotherapy

We are pleased to announce that the full range of stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) indications are now available for patients at GenesisCare’s Centre for radiotherapy at the Cromwell Hospital.

Our newly renovated radiotherapy department has been specially designed to offer patients access to some of the worlds most advanced stereotactic radiotherapy platforms. Our new department now houses a Varian Edge Linac, a Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™ and, coming soon, a new MRIdian MR Linac. This combination of next generation radiotherapy platforms will enable us to become an international centre of excellence for both extracranial and intracranial stereotactic radiotherapy treatments.

Regarding the capabilities of each machine, the Varian Edge Linac can deliver SABR precisely and effectively to tumours located within the lungs, spine, brain, and other areas of the body where ablative radiotherapy treatment is indicated. Using its 2.5mm MLC leaves, it can sculpt the radiotherapy beam to conform to the tumour target whilst using its advanced on-board imaging capabilities to track tumour motion with accuracy checks every 10ms.

Using this real time telemetry data, it can precisely calculate, dynamically adapt, and essentially conform the SABR treatment delivery to the patient’s movement in all six degrees of freedom and the patient’s respiratory motion.

The Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon™ is the latest generation of Gamma Knife technology which offers clinicians and their patients the best in class solution for stereotactic radiosurgery delivery. The integration of new technologies within the Icon™ platform provides clinicians the option to perform single or fractionated frame-based or frameless treatments, allowing for more individualized delivery—without sacrificing precision and accuracy.

GenesisCare was proud to be the first independent healthcare provider in the UK to offer SABR treatment using the MRIdian MR Linac platform. In Q2 2021, the GenesisCare radiotherapy department in the Cromwell will be the second UK centre to offer state of the art MR linac based SABR treatments.

MR linac technology combines high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning techniques with extremely powerful radiotherapy beams to treat tumours more accurately than conventional radiotherapy. This means the MRIdian can show the exact position and shape of the tumour during treatment, so it can target radiation at the tumour precisely. The MRIdian’s increased accuracy means the radiation beam is less likely to damage healthy tissue than conventional radiotherapy which is important because side effects typically occur when healthy tissue is damaged.

Combining these next generation SABR and SRS platforms with GenesisCare’s leading clinical governance and quality assurance structure, allows us to offer patients a world class stereotactic radiotherapy service. We know that our new radiotherapy department will offer a safe and calming environment where leading clinicians can feel confident knowing that they are providing the absolute best care for their patients.
