Local specialist hits 250 cases of SABR lung cancer treatment on the Gold Coast
Bringing industry-leading treatment to people with lung cancer on the Gold Coast
Experienced Radiation Oncologist Dr Sagar Ramani has just delivered his 250th SABR treatment for lung cancer! What a remarkable achievement.
Under Dr Ramani's guidance, our lung treatments are delivered using advanced techniques and best in class technology, aiming for the best possible outcomes for our patients.
SABR, also known as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a short course, high dose of radiation therapy. Delivered in fewer treatment sessions than standard external beam radiation therapy, SABR aims to minimise toxicity, deliver precision targeting, and potentially improve quality-of-life.1-3.
It is delivered in an outpatient setting and typically patients can be in and out for treatment in under 20 minutes per session. SABR has been shown to be superior to conventional treatment in terms of tumour control and overall survival in randomised studies.4
We met up with Dr Ramani to discuss this amazing treatment milestone and talk about the impact SABR has on lung cancer treatment.
"Having the opportunity to work within a company that is leading the way in advancements in treatment and technologies is a privilege. SABR has changed the way we treat lung cancer. It gives us a non-invasive, well-tolerated, non-surgical treatment option for both primary and secondary tumours. The technology delivers radiation with exceptional precision, enabling us to give higher, more precise doses of radiation therapy to target the tumour/s, and reduce the dose to surrounding normal tissues at the same time. This means less treatment sessions for patients, less impact on their day-to-day life, and more time for the important stuff." - Dr Ramani
"I had treatment for lung cancer twice at GenesisCare. Dr Ramani and the team always give me peace of mind when I go in for my regular check-ups, I feel truly cared for." - Lorraine, a GenesisCare patient treated in 2015 and 2021.
Dr Sagar Ramani brings a wealth of experience to our Gold Coast centres (Tugun and Southport). He served as chair of the SABR lung program in GenesisCare Queensland from its inception in 2014 until 2019. In addition, he was the Director of Training for RANZCR trainee registrars on the Gold Coast from February 2015 to June 2018. He is currently the Regional Medical Director for GenesisCare Gold Coast. Sagar has been actively involved in the development of a national radiation oncology portal for GenesisCare.
Sagar has experience in combined modality treatments and is involved in several clinical trials. He has visiting and admission rights to John Flynn Private Hospital, Pindara Private Hospital, and Gold Coast Private Hospital. Sagar attends various multidisciplinary meetings on the Gold Coast.
