Supporting you to thrive

The Thrivorship program is a multidisciplinary survivorship program available to Brisbane patients.

Beginning during radiotherapy treatment, it provides support from an experienced survivorship doctor, nurse practitioner and allied health professionals to help patients recover, maintain wellbeing and navigate life after cancer treatment.

Completing treatment is an important milestone, but recovery and wellbeing continue beyond your final appointment. Many people need support as they regain confidence, return to everyday activities and adjust to life after cancer treatment.

The Thrivorship program is designed to support patients during this transition, providing access to services and resources that promote long-term health, wellbeing and quality of life.

About the thrivorship program

The GenesisCare thrivorship program provides coordinated support through regular follow-up, education and access to a multidisciplinary team. Working closely with your treating specialists, GP and other healthcare providers, the program helps ensure your ongoing care and wellbeing remain supported beyond treatment.

The program includes::

  • Regular meetings with members of the Thrivorship team
  • Survivorship Care Plans to support communication between your healthcare providers
  • One-to-one education and support
  • Resources to help you take an active role in your ongoing health and wellbeing

We also work closely with St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside and The Wesley Hospital Choices Cancer Support Centre to connect Thrivors with additional services and support.

As part of the program, Thrivors are invited to attend a series of free educational talks led by Dr Leesa Jackson and colleagues from across Brisbane and beyond. These sessions cover topics relevant to people living with and beyond cancer, providing opportunities to learn, ask questions and connect with others who have shared experiences.

Where appropriate, Thrivors may also be referred to additional services, including:

  • Exercise physiology
  • Lymphoedema and breast oncology physiotherapy
  • Dietetics.

Meet Dr Leesa Jackson

Dr Leesa Jackson is a medical practitioner with extensive experience in oncology, having worked across both medical and radiation oncology throughout her career. Originally from Townsville in North Queensland, she studied medicine at James Cook University before working in public hospitals across Queensland and later joining GenesisCare.

Leesa has a strong interest in patient support, education, counselling and survivorship care. She is passionate about helping people navigate life during and after cancer treatment and has led a number of local initiatives focused on improving the patient experience, particularly during transition periods that can often be challenging for patients and their families.

In addition to her clinical work, Leesa has undertaken further education in psychology and has a particular interest in supporting patients experiencing cancer-related fatigue. She is also involved in ongoing research and service development aimed at improving survivorship outcomes.

As Chair of the thrivorship program, Leesa works alongside patients, carers and healthcare professionals to help create a supportive environment where people can connect, learn and thrive beyond cancer treatment.

Outside of work, Leesa enjoys spending time with her family and teaches speech and drama to children at a local primary school.
