FAQs
Radiation therapy techniques describe the different ways radiation can be shaped, delivered and adjusted to treat cancer while protecting healthy tissue.1
Different techniques allow doctors to tailor radiation to the tumour’s shape, size, depth and location, providing a safer and more effective treatment.2
Your radiation oncologist selects the technique based on cancer type, tumour location, dose required and the need to protect nearby organs.3
Most external radiation techniques feel the same—radiation is painless and the machine may move around you during treatment.4
Yes. Radiation therapy has been used for over 100 years, with strong evidence for its safety and effectiveness. Modern techniques further reduce risks.5
Most preparations are similar—such as attending a planning appointment—but some techniques may require specific instructions (for example, bladder filling or breath-hold). Your treatment team will let you know exactly what you need to do. Please speak with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.6
