An integrative breast cancer offering at our Gold Coast centres
Supporting breast cancer patients through treatment and survivorship
Each breast cancer journey is unique, but each holds a range of emotions - a rollercoaster of highs and lows. That is where our unique Gold Coast Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic steps in to support, embrace and nurture you through the unknown.
Our clinics offer a dedicated service for breast cancer patients – a specialised clinic supporting you through treatment and survivorship.
Australian cancer data shows survival rates for breast cancer are increasing1 meaning a growing number of people are transitioning into life after cancer, and many of those patients report feeling lost after treatment has ended. 2,3
The GenesisCare Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic focuses on building a relationship with each person, understanding their individual needs and tailoring a plan to support them after treatment - guided by the experience of our specialist breast care team.
Developed with a focus on transitioning patients from acute treatment to their new normal, the clinic assists with readjusting to life after cancer treatment. It covers physical, emotional and social impacts of having breast cancer.
Why is the Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic unique?
The clinic offers personalised care led by a Nurse Practitioner and a team of Specialist Breast Care Nurses with advanced training and expertise in breast cancer care. This allows them to offer timely and tailored support including:
- Development of a personalised care plan with each patient to help navigate and manage their health after treatment
- Assisting patients with the transition to life after treatment
- Discussion of overall health/wellbeing and addressing any concerns
- Discussion of follow-up planning and arrangement of referrals as needed
Help is not limited to just the physical impacts of breast cancer and its treatments. Mental health, intimacy, emotional well-being, as well as broader topics such as ongoing imaging, menopause management and navigating the healthcare system are all areas of support available through the Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic.
We can provide referrals to other healthcare professionals such as psychologists, exercise physiologists and lymphoedema-trained therapists.
How do people access the Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic at our Gold Coast clinics?
Patients treated for breast cancer at GenesisCare, Southport or Tugun are invited to schedule follow-up appointments at the Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic for continued care to assist with their transition into long-term survivorship.
Why was the clinic developed?
The Breast Cancer Wellness Clinic was developed to fill a gap in healthcare services between the end of treatment and life after breast cancer. This can be an unsettling and isolating time, with patients reporting they struggle with their body post-treatment, which may feel unfamiliar or different. They may also feel vulnerable when moving from frequent appointments with healthcare professionals to fewer interactions once treatment ends.
How it works
During breast cancer treatment, patients will meet with a Nurse Practitioner or Specialist Breast Care Nurse to organise a follow-up appointment 3–6 weeks after treatment is completed. This one-hour consultation provides an opportunity for meaningful and supportive conversations, including a thorough review of the patient’s progress and the collaborative development of a comprehensive care plan.
