Prostate cancer treatment at GenesisCare

We specialise in the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating prostate cancer that are proven to be effective. Our teams of expert uro-oncologists continually evaluate the latest prostate cancer treatments so we can offer the most up-to-date options to every patient without delay.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, but early diagnosis and treatment can mean a positive outcome for many.

GenesisCare - Cardiovascular disease and care
Chapter 1

We are the leading private provider of prostate cancer radiotherapy in the UK and offer world-class expertise and state-of-the-art facilities. Radiotherapy is a mainstay of prostate cancer treatment and uses targeted, high-energy radiation beams to destroy cancer cells. It’s often a preferred treatment option for early stage prostate cancer (which has not yet spread) because it’s less invasive than surgery.

At GenesisCare we specialise in advanced radiotherapy techniques that are designed to be effective and minimise side effects such as incontinence and impotence.

These include the use of spacing gels that protect the rectum by moving it away from the prostate gland during radiotherapy treatment. Studies have shown that patients experience fewer bowel, urinary and erectile dysfunction side effects as well as improved quality of life compared with those who don’t have spacing gels inserted. An absorbable hydrogel is injected during a simple one-off procedure and is gradually absorbed into the body after around six months. At GenesisCare we offer spacing gels, such as SpaceOAR® Hydrogel, at no extra charge to all patients who have not had their prostate removed and who are undergoing conventional prostate radiotherapy.

Our latest generation radiotherapy machines are designed to deliver highly targeted radiation beams. The accuracy of these treatments, together with the expertise of our teams, means that we can often complete a course of radiotherapy in a shorter amount of time – sometimes in a week depending on which type of radiotherapy you have.

We offer:

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) which directs beams of radiation in an arc across the treatment area. Together with surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT), it’s possible to very accurately target areas of cancer, adjusting the beam and intensity of radiation dose to allow for movements in the body and avoid areas such as the rectum. At GenesisCare VMAT is offered as standard to all eligible patients with early stage prostate cancer and treatment typically takes about four weeks.

MRIdian is a new type of SABR which includes an MR scanner to take live images so it can see exactly where a tumour is at the same time as treating it, safely avoiding the healthy tissues and organs surrounding it. GenesisCare has the first MRIdian in the UK at our centre in Oxford and a team of specialists dedicated to treating cancer of the prostate, amongst others. Don’t worry if you’re not in the Oxford area – we accept referrals from all over the UK and provide free transport depending on location and treatment schedule.

Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) uses very focused, high-energy radiation beams to remove tumours in five or less sessions – it’s often used in place of surgery.

Advanced radiotherapy

If your consultant recommends prostate cancer surgery, for example a prostatectomy to remove the prostate gland, this can be arranged conveniently at one of our partner hospitals. You can then continue your other treatments and care at GenesisCare.

Side effects

No treatment is without side effects. Your doctor will explain these to you depending on the type of radiotherapy you have.

There are various drug therapies used in the management of prostate cancer, including hormone therapy. These treatments are available through GenesisCare, together with a wide range of the latest anti-cancer drugs.

We offer chemotherapy for prostate cancer, with specialist cancer nurses, on-site chemotherapy suites (when needed) and a 24/7 on-call service.

Other treatments often used in prostate cancer treatment, such as bisphosphonates for loss of bone density, are also available.

Advanced disease

If prostate cancer has spread to other parts of the body, it’s called advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.

There are various treatment options for advanced prostate cancer and at GenesisCare we also offer a ground-breaking innovative procedure called Theranostics 177Lutetium PSMA therapy – a type of nuclear medicine. It works like a smart ‘homing missile’ to first detect cancer cells using a PET/CT scan and then sending a radioactive substance, 177Lutetium, directly to the cell to destroy it. The aim is to reduce the size and progress of the cancer and ease symptoms.

At GenesisCare our expert clinicians were the first in the UK to provide this treatment. We now offer this innovative treatment at our centre in Windsor for any patient in the UK or from overseas.

Other treatments for advanced prostate cancer include Radium-223 treatment and palliative radiotherapy for cancer that has spread, for example into the pelvis. In this case we offer VMAT radiotherapy treatments to improve pain and mobility, usually within 48 hours of a treatment planning scan.

Supporting therapies

If you choose private prostate cancer treatment at GenesisCare, you can expect a personalised treatment plan that includes life-changing therapies. These include exercise medicine – a personalised programme of carefully planned and supported activity that has been shown to improve outcomes for people with cancer, by enhancing their quality of life and reducing the impact of cancer. We also offer every patient a wellbeing expert and holistic therapies such as counselling, acupuncture, massage and reflexology through our unique partnership with the Penny Brohn UK charity.

Having become part of this family, I know they’re going to be there for me in the future. Michael

Chapter 5

For anyone concerned about prostate cancer symptoms, we offer specialist prostate cancer diagnosis at our centres and rapid access to diagnostic clinics run by consultant urologists. Here you can have a full range of diagnostic tests, including an examination, ultrasound scans and blood tests, with appointments available within 24 hours and same-day results.

Our GenesisCare centres also offer more advanced investigations, such as mpMRI scans, 68Gallium PSMA PET/CT and radioisotope bone scans for staging prostate cancer and monitoring ongoing treatment. These sophisticated technologies allow us to make fast and accurate treatment decisions based on each patient’s own cancer.

Prostate cancer symptoms

Prostate cancer does not always cause symptoms. Some men may experience difficulty urinating, such as slow starting, a reduced flow or needing to urinate more frequently or urgently and with some pain. However, in older men this can often also be a sign of an enlarged prostate which is not a serious condition. If you’re concerned, or if you also have blood in your urine or semen, lower back pain, pain in your testicles or unexplained weight loss, you should seek medical advice or book an appointment at our UrologyHub clinic.
