When other treatments haven’t worked, radiotherapy can offer effective pain relief. It’s used to stop some conditions from getting worse. It can also improve or maintain your quality of life by delaying, or even preventing, the need for surgery or other invasive treatments.
Dupuytren’s disease
Dupuytren’s disease, or Dupuytren’s contracture, affects the connective tissue in the palm of the hand. It starts as nodules (lumps) and cords (lines of tissue that follow the tendons). Left untreated, it can cause one or more fingers to bend inwards towards the palm permanently. It can worsen over time, restricting movement and making it difficult to carry out everyday tasks.
Ledderhose disease
Ledderhose disease is a thickening of the connective tissue in the sole of the foot. It starts with hard, flat, lumps (nodules) that grow on the soles of the feet. Left untreated, it can cause tenderness and pain when standing or walking.
Plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a condition caused by a strain on the strong band of tissue that stretches from the heel to the bones in the mid-foot (also known as the plantar fascia). It leads to inflammation and degeneration of the fascia, which causes pain in the heel, making it difficult to walk or run.
Achilles tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis is a pain in the Achilles tendon, which is at the back of the ankle. It’s caused by damage or overuse of the tendon, often due to a sudden increase in exercise. The tendon becomes weaker and less flexible, and microscopic tears develop. These result in pain, weakness and swelling.
