Introducing a new initiative

GenesisCare, in collaboration with St John of God Hospital Subiaco, the University of Western Australia, Medibank, and HBF, has been conducting a pilot study in WA to explore the impact of bundling and patient navigation in early-stage breast cancer care.

Our commitment to pursuing excellent care for patients

We understand that being diagnosed with breast cancer can be a challenging experience. Together with our network of highly skilled healthcare professionals we have developed a package of care to help ensure your treatment pathway goes as smoothly as possible.

The early-stage breast cancer care bundle (the Bundle) aims to provide you with the evidence-based care you require with upfront transparency of cost, including an estimation of potential out-of-pocket (OOP) cost for your care.

About the Bundle

GenesisCare has partnered with specialists, allied health professionals, and private health insurance providers to design a 12-month package of services that gives you access to high-quality, personalised care from diagnosis to post-treatment.

The Bundle is for eligible women or men who:

  • will have breast surgery with a participating Bundle surgeon (contact us for details)
  • have been diagnosed with early stage (non-metastatic) breast cancer
  • are HBF or Medibank insurance members with hospital cover (bronze level or higher). Extras cover not necessary.

Please speak with your health insurer and treating doctor to confirm that you have the right level of cover and meet the criteria to be eligible for the Bundle.

What is included in the Bundle?

The Bundle includes the following services:

  • Surgery (following initial consultation)
  • Medical Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology
  • Cardio-oncology
  • Physiotherapy/ Lymphoedema therapy
  • Dietetics
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Patient navigation (explained below)

The patient navigator is an essential member of the program team, dedicated to supporting patients through their treatment journey and helping them to focus on what matters most to them.

The patient navigator helps patients manage appointments, solve queries, and connect with specialists, as well as access additional support if needed.

Independent program evaluation

As part of the creation of the Bundle, GenesisCare and The University of Technology in Sydney have designed and set up an independent evaluation to determine whether the program objectives have been achieved. Patients who consent to be part of the Evaluation will complete four questionnaires, with an invite to a 15-minute phone interview at the end of the 12-month Bundle period.

The Evaluation also includes data collection of service use as well as provider, program staff, and payor perspectives. The pilot is expected to be completed in late 2024/early 2025, at which point data from the evaluation will be analysed and a final report will be delivered outlining the success of the Bundle and providing recommendations for future bundling and patient navigator programs.

Awards and Recognition

In 2023, the early-stage Breast Cancer Bundle pilot was recognised by the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) with the Value-based Health Care Innovation Award. The award, sponsored by Telstra Health aims to recognise projects that are significantly innovative, either in the start-up phases of development, or an established project demonstrating results.
