Biography

Clinical interests in neurological, brain and spine, lung, and skin cancers, sarcoma, benign conditions (including Dupytren's disease, keloid scars), and rare tumours.

Dr David Schlect, born in Queensland, earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Queensland in 1979. He completed his residency at the Royal Brisbane Hospital before training as a radiation oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, and furthering his expertise at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. In 1990. After qualifying as a radiation oncologist, Dr Schlect joined GenesisCare in Queensland.

Dr Schlect has a long-standing commitment to clinical teaching, having served as a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland from 1990 to 2010. He is currently the Director of Training (DoT) for Radiation Oncologists through RANZCR and continues to mentor medical students during their rotations at GenesisCare.

Throughout his career, David has contributed to the advancement of modern radiation therapy techniques. He is currently involved in the DEPART trial, which explores the use of radiation therapy in treating Dupuytren’s disease. He is a strong advocate for a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and actively participates in various medical and oncology organizations.

Dr Schlect has presented at numerous medical conferences, sharing his expertise on brain, lung, skin, and spinal cancers. Recently, he addressed the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) on the therapeutic benefits of poetry and art-making for patients and their families during treatment.

Dedicated to supporting patients through their cancer journey, Dr Schlect is passionate about educating the community on integrative cancer care. In 2014, he co-authored "Hope: A Cancer Doctor’s Life Secrets," offering insights on the importance of hope and practical advice for daily living with cancer. His significant contributions to the community were recognized at the RANZCR annual College meeting in October 2023, where he received the inaugural "Service to the Community" award, and at the Wesley Hospital's annual Emeritus Dinner in December 2024.

Dr Schlect is based at GenesisCare’s Wesley and Chermside Clinics and regularly attends the Noosa clinic.
