GenesisCare honours local doctor at Bryan Burmeister Cancer Centre ceremony

Fraser Coast, Queensland – Cancer care provider GenesisCare is naming one of its radiation therapy buildings in Fraser Coast after a long-serving local doctor who has been instrumental in establishing radiation therapy for the Wide Bay region and has supported thousands of patients from the area.

Today, GenesisCare announced one of its existing radiation therapy buildings in Urraween will be named after radiation oncologist Professor Bryan Burmeister and unveiled a commemorative plaque in his honour.

Professor Bryan Burmeister was one of the first radiation oncologists in Wide Bay to establish and launch cancer care services locally. He has supported patients from across the region and advocated for the integration of surgical, medical oncology and allied health services to better support the care needs of cancer patients throughout their treatment journeys.

A cancer researcher and university lecturer, Professor Burmeister has published more than 150 research papers, was president of the board and chair of the scientific committee at the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group, which fosters collaboration between cancer researchers. Professor Burmeister has worked closely with the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) and helped to establish access to clinical trials in Wide Bay, which has given local and eligible cancer patients the opportunity to take part in appropriate cancer research closer to their homes.

GenesisCare’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Lizzio said: “GenesisCare is proud to commemorate Professor Burmeister’s significant contribution to cancer care in Fraser Coast and the Wide Bay region. Bryan’s dedication and hard work has led to real benefits for patients living locally. Patients now have more access to advanced cancer treatment close to their homes and can participate in appropriate clinical trials. We thank him and honour him today.”

In attendance today, Mayor of Fraser Coast Regional Council George Seymour said: “On behalf of the Fraser Coast community, I thank Professor Burmeister for his extraordinary service. His expertise and compassion have left a lasting imprint on the lives of so many local families. Naming the building in his honour ensures that his contributions will always be remembered by the community he served so faithfully.”

Professor Burmeister said: “I’m humbled and honoured to accept this tribute. Fraser Coast has become my home and a place where many memorable work experiences have taken place. The team I work with here are the best. I take much inspiration from my patients who bravely face cancer each day and have tried to use my time and abilities to contribute something to the fight against the disease. Thank you for this honour.”

As GenesisCare commemorates the outstanding contribution of Professor Burmeister as he retires, it is also welcoming a new radiation oncologist into the Wide Bay region. Dr Phoebe Allison has begun treating patients at GenesisCare’s Fraser Coast and Bundaberg centres this month and joins existing radiation oncologists Dr Tracy Sexton and Dr Tracy Wang-Chao.
