GenesisCare Appoints New Oncology Australia Chief Medical Officer

GenesisCare is delighted to announce that Dr Marie Burke, Radiation Oncologist and Chairperson of the Oncology Australia Clinical Leaders Forum, has been appointed as Chief Medical Officer, Oncology Australia, succeeding A/Prof Peter O’Brien.

Welcoming Dr Burke

Dr Burke is a highly respected Radiation Oncologist within GenesisCare’s Queensland (QLD) practice and brings a depth of expertise and experience to the role. Dr Burke previously served for ten years as the Chairperson of the QLD Clinical Management Committee.

Dr Burke has led the reshaping of the Australian Clinical Leaders Forum and supported our doctor group, championing career development and mentoring the next generation of doctors across our network.

Dr Burke says it is an “honour and a privilege” to step into the role of Chief Medical Officer, Oncology Australia.

“Having worked as a Radiation Oncologist for more than 30 years, I firmly believe what sets GenesisCare apart is our unwavering commitment to expanding access for patients and the communities we serve, regardless of location.”

“Leveraging our global network of clinical leaders and treatment centres, we are able to provide all of our patients access to the latest treatment technologies, novel therapies and global clinical trials,” continued Dr Burke.

“I look forward to joining our global clinical leadership team, led by our Group Chief Medical Officer, Dr Wally Curran, and collaborating with all of our chief medical officers to advance our mission to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients, through innovation and research.”

The Chief Medical Officer role is a key leadership position within our Oncology Australia organisation, driving GenesisCare’s clinical agenda through leadership of our doctor teams, research programs, clinical governance, ethics, and quality through standardisation, all in order to create better access for patients to high quality care.

Group Chief Medical Officer, Dr Wally Curran, MD, said GenesisCare was delighted to welcome Dr Burke to its global clinical leadership team.

“Marie has already demonstrated exceptional leadership in her current roles. Her efforts in career development and doctor engagement are serving as models for our GenesisCare physician programs in the United States and Europe,” said Dr Wally Curran.

Thank you A/Prof Peter O’Brien, Outgoing Chief Medical Officer, Oncology Australia

GenesisCare would like to thank A/Prof Peter O’Brien for his exceptional contributions to GenesisCare over the past five years.

In his role as Chief Medical Officer A/Prof O’Brien has strongly advocated for increasing patient access to global research, driving high quality cancer care across all of our centres, and more recently, guiding our teams through COVID-19 to ensure the safety of our patients and clinical staff.

A/Prof Peter O’Brien will continue his clinical practice at our Newcastle centre and will play a pivotal role in our clinical leadership team at our new integrated cancer centre in Maitland, opening on the 20th of December 2021.
