Crestani Cancer Foundation Donation Announced as New Linear Accelerator Goes Live at GenesisCare Darlinghurst
GenesisCare has today announced the commissioning of a new linear accelerator at its Darlinghurst centre in New South Wales, alongside the launch of a substantial education-focused donation from the Crestani Cancer Foundation, marking a major milestone for advanced cancer treatment at the clinic.
The new Elekta Versa HD linear accelerator officially went live on Wednesday 22 April, treating its first patient and further strengthening GenesisCare Darlinghurst’s capability to deliver world‑class, highly precise radiotherapy. The new technology enables the treatment of a broad range of tumours, including highly complex cancers.
Complementing this technology investment, the Crestani Cancer Foundation has committed $80,000 over several years to support the ongoing education and professional development of radiation therapists and nurses at the Darlinghurst centre. The donation represents a long‑term investment in people, skills and excellence in cancer care.
This latest linear accelerator follows the upgrade of the centre’s second machine last year and sits alongside the advanced MR Linac technology already in place. Together, these state‑of‑the‑art systems ensure patients at GenesisCare Darlinghurst have access to some of the most advanced radiotherapy options available.
The Crestani Cancer Foundation donation will enable a radiation therapist and nursing staff from the centre to upgrade skills, attend specialist education courses or participate in conferences each year. The funding will create a lasting legacy that supports learning, innovation and excellence in radiation therapy practice.
Founder Yvonne Crestani attended the Darlinghurst centre to mark both the launch of the new linear accelerator and the announcement of the Foundation’s donation — an occasion of deep personal significance.
“The Crestani Cancer Foundation was established to support education, learning and excellence in healthcare,” Mrs Crestani said. “This award is named in memory of my late husband, Evio ‘Chris’ Crestani, who dedicated his career to radiation therapy and patient care. Through this donation, we are proud to support the ongoing professional growth of the GenesisCare Darlinghurst team and help improve outcomes for patients well into the future.”
Established in 2006, the Crestani Cancer Foundation has supported 117 scholarships across Australia, benefiting radiation therapy students, palliative care nurses, medical students and cancer research initiatives. In its 20th anniversary year, the Foundation is expanding its impact through longer‑term, high‑value donations aligned with its mission—such as the Darlinghurst education award.
GenesisCare Darlinghurst Centre Leader David Crawford welcomed the combined investment in advanced technology and staff development.
“The launch of our new linear accelerator is a major milestone for our centre and our patients,” Mr Crawford said. “We are equally grateful for the Crestani Cancer Foundation’s substantial donation, which demonstrates a strong commitment to investing in our people. This support helps ensure our radiation therapists and nurses continue to deliver the highest standard of care now and into the future.”
As part of the donation, the Crestani Cancer Foundation has also gifted an original wall‑hanging artwork to be displayed at the Darlinghurst centre, honouring the memory of Evio (Chris) Crestani and his lasting contribution to radiation therapy and patient care.
Together, the commissioning of the new linear accelerator and the announcement of the Crestani Cancer Foundation donation highlight a shared commitment to innovation, education and excellence in cancer care at GenesisCare Darlinghurst.
