GenesisCare to bring next-generation Accela radiotherapy platform to Australia
Sydney, Australia – Leading cancer care provider GenesisCare today announced plans to bring Accela, a next-generation radiotherapy treatment delivery platform, to Australia, reinforcing its commitment to expanding access to world-class cancer care innovations for local patients.
Unveiled by Siemens Healthineers at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting in Boston late last month, Accela is the first radiotherapy solution engineered around the NeoArc dynamic modulated arc therapy (DMAT), a breakthrough technique combining speed, precision and adaptability.
The Accela platform enables stereotactic treatments to be delivered in a single breath-hold and multi-site stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) treatment in as little as 60 seconds, reducing the amount of time patients spend on the treatment table.
“The introduction of Accela to GenesisCare is an exciting development for our patients and doctors,” said GenesisCare Chief Executive Officer, Richard Lizzio. “As leaders in cancer care, we are committed to bringing global innovations to the local market and expanding patient access to new treatments. The addition of Accela to our suite of treatment technologies will help deliver more personalised care and better clinical outcomes for our patients.”
“This breakthrough will see patients spending less of their lives being treated for cancer, ultimately improving their quality of life. We are proud to bring this advanced treatment technology to our patients.”
“Today reflects GenesisCare’s continued focus on bringing global innovation to Australian patients and expanding access to technologies that support personalised, precise and patient-centred cancer care.”
“With advanced imaging and adaptive radiotherapy capability in the treatment room, Accela will allow personalised treatment delivery for our patients,” said GenesisCare Head of Clinical Innovations and Medical Physicist, Associate Professor Michael Jameson. “Efficient delivery of highly complex radiotherapy treatments will result in a better patient experience by reducing time in the treatment room, enabling more advanced treatments to become practical for everyday care."
“Accela marks a generational advancement in radiotherapy treatment, providing more personalised and precise care for patients,” said GenesisCare Chief Medical Officer and Radiation Oncologist, Dr Marcus Dreosti.
“The breakthrough brings patients to the forefront of treatment: rather than adapting the patient to fit the treatment plan, Accela adapts to the patient as they are in the moment.”
GenesisCare’s Accela announcement follows its recent acquisition of another state-of-the-art technology in ZAP-X: a highly precise next-generation platform designed specifically for non-invasive cranial radiosurgery. ZAP-X installation is underway at GenesisCare’s centre at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, with first patient treatments anticipated before year-end. This announcement further demonstrates GenesisCare’s commitment to delivering more personalised treatment and care experiences for patients.
The Accela platform combines a high-speed gantry, high dose rates, dual-layer multi-leaf collimator (MLC), a large HyperSight imaging panel and a dynamic treatment delivery. The integration of these latest advancements in radiotherapy technology in one machine is an important step forward for the future of cancer patients, resulting in the reduction of delivery time, and increased accuracy and efficiency, thus improving both outcomes and confidence for patients and clinicians.
