What is volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)?
GenesisCare provides VMAT/IMRT to all patients at no additional cost and without delay to commencement of the treatment process
VMAT/IMRT are complex radiation treatments that are normally used for complex cancers requiring targeted radiation treatment. It is very accurate and maximises the radiation dose to the tumour while minimising the overall dose as well as exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
VMAT works by delivering a continuous beam of radiotherapy in an arc which moves around the tumour, changing the beam shape and treatment dose automatically as it moves.
Treatment sessions with VMAT are much shorter – usually between just two to four minutes.
We have created systems which use automation and artificial intelligence (AI) to enable VMAT/IMRT radiotherapy to be used for all cancers, all body sites and all patients. Unlike most providers, we do not ration access to these higher complexity treatments, our system approach enables us to plan treatments in hours and start treatments within days. This is particularly the case for patients with late stage disease who require urgent palliative radiotherapy treatment, but the cost of planning and delivery is considered too high and the time to plan is long.
We believe VMAT and IMRT are ideally suited to the palliation setting, enabling highly targeted doses of radiation to the tumour whilst reducing the exposure of adjacent normal tissues to the effects of radiation.
