GenesisCare Foundation launches Flood Relief response program to support access to critical cancer services in hard hit communities

Elaine is a cancer patient who was due to restart her treatment a week after having lost her home to devastating floods in the Northern Rivers Region, NSW. As a result of the floods, she moved over 100km away to stay with family, meaning she was forced to interrupt vital treatment because she couldn’t afford local accommodation.

In response to the recent devastating floods in NSW and QLD, GenesisCare Foundation has launched a Flood Relief response program to ensure patients like Elaine are still able to receive access to potentially life-saving treatment.

With the help of the GenesisCare Foundation, Elaine will be able to continue travelling to GenesisCare’s centre in Tugun on the Gold Coast for radiation therapy, while she remains in her community and focuses on rebuilding her life.

As communities rebuild, the Foundation’s Flood Relief Response program will support cancer patients to ensure their treatment remains uninterrupted.

GenesisCare Foundation Manager, Vanessa Mazzei, said: “We are hearing first hand from our centres in QLD and NSW about the devastating impact of the recent floods on some patients and their families.”

“We have launched this program to ensure our patients are able to continue care in a safe environment and minimise some of the financial, physical and emotional pressures felt by patients during this difficult time.”

Designed to enable the continuation of care during such challenging times, the program will offer reimbursement for transport, parking, accommodation, and costs associated with accessing treatment, up to a maximum of $1,000 per patient.
